Confession Session with Rep. Kyra Bolden

Updated: Oct 31, 2020

In the midst of one of the most important and contentious elections of our time, we often forget the humanity of our elected officials. And rightfully so. Many have wielded power and privilege that the average person could not even begin to fathom. But even though some hold the power that literally shapes the lives and changes realities for thousands, the fact still stands, that they too are subject to human frailty.

This week I'm sharing a conversation that reminds us of just that. I sat down in the office of State Representative, Kyra Bolden, over a year ago. The conversation I expected compared to the conversation we had were two different things.

Representative Bolden represents the 35th District in Michigan, one of the richest republican districts in the state. Our conversation spanned the breadth and depth of why she decided to pursue a career in politics, to her goals for her district to even confessing a truth that many of constituents knew little about.

Rep. Bolden stood firmly on her identity of being honest in all that she does but in our conversation, she took it a step further and also allowed vulnerability in. Our intimate chat revealed what many of us already know but it's also a gentle reminder that we never know the battle that someone is fighting.
